THIS DAY (FEBRUARY 08) IN THE WORLD OF SPORT MARKS . . . the 36th anniversary of the day, in 1974, when three British referees – England’s Jack Taylor, Wales’ Clive Thomas and Scotland’s Bob Davidson – were selected for the World Cup finals in Germany. Taylor, a Wolverhampton butcher, subsequently refereed the Final in which hosts West Germany beat Holland 2-1 and awarded the first-ever World Cup Final penalty. In other sports, in 1950, Associated Press named Jim Thorpe and Baby Didrikson Zaharias as the greatest male and female athletes of the first half of the 20th century. In 1998 the first women’s ice hockey game in Olympic history saw Finland beat Sweden 6-0. WORLD EVENTS – 1587: Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. 1828: Birth of Jules Verne. 1925: Birth of Hollywood actor Jack Lemmon. 1931: Birth of James Dean. 1955: Birth of legal thriller author John Grisham. 1968: Three college students die in Orangeburg, South Carolina, during a civil rights protest against a whites-only bowling alley.
