Prof Dr Ugur Erdener re-elected World Archery President for 4th term

Executive Board and committee members were also appointed in Mexico City.

Prof Dr Ugur Erdener was unanimously re-elected unopposed as World Archery President for a fourth four-year term at the federation’s 2017 Congress in Mexico City as delegates appointed officers to the Executive Board and committees.

“Thank you for your ongoing support,” said Prof Dr Erdener as he addressed delegates, later adding: “It is a pleasure and an honour to continue as President of World Archery, one of the most forward-thinking, proactive and unified families in the world of international sport.”

“I look forward to working with our member federations to further grow the important Olympic sport of archery, make continued progress in areas of good governance, clean sport and universality, and make significant strides towards World Archery’s vision of a world in which everyone has the opportunity to make archery their activity of choice.”

Colombia’s Maria Emma Gaviria and Sanguan Kosavinta of Thailand were re-elected Vice Presidents, and Greg Easton of USA, Vladimir Esheev of Russia, and Aladin Gabr of Egypt were re-appointed as members of the Executive Board.

The 52nd Archery Congress in Mexico City started on Friday 13 October 2017 with voting delegates or appointed proxies representing 83 countries accepting new member associations and approving a number of rule changes affecting governance issues and competition operations.

‚ÄčAll interpretations and bylaws approved by the Executive Board in the two-year period prior to Congress 2017 were confirmed by delegates.

In his opening speech World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener said that since he took up his position in 2005, archery had reinforced its position in the international sporting arena.

“I can happily state that we now enjoy a healthy presence as a core Olympic sport, in the top half of the Olympic Programme, 13th among twenty-six sports in London and twenty-eight sports in Rio,” he said.

Prof Dr Erdener noted the universality and global appeal of archery today thanks to the progression of the World Archery Plan, an ongoing strategic approach to cementing archery’s position internationally and nationally.

Reflecting on the progress made in developing archery around the world, in terms of performance, governance and attractiveness, Prof Dr Erdener urged federations to continue to evolve and look toward the future.

Quoting International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, he said: “You have to introduce change when things are going well. Otherwise it might already be too late.”

Through a video message, Thomas Bach congratulated Prof Dr Erdener for his great vision, dedication and leadership.

“More people than ever before can enjoy the fascination of your wonderful sport,” he said. “You have every reason to look at the future with confidence.”

“In this spirit of partnership and solidarity, I wish you all fruitful discussions and a successful Congress,” the IOC President ended his video message.

The World Archery President closed by thanking the entire World Archery Family for its continued support, World Archery’s sponsors for their investment in the sport and World Archery’s staff for their hard, professional work.
