LA 2028 congratulates "inspirational" Anita DeFrantz on election as IOC Vice President

LOS ANGELES - LA 2028 today congratulates the long-serving IOC Member, LA84 Foundation Honorary President and LA 2028 Senior Advisor for Legacy, Anita DeFrantz, on her election as one of four International Olympic Committee Vice Presidents for the second time in her illustrious career, twenty years after her first election.

The election at the IOC Session in Lima, Peru is the latest milestone in DeFrantz's pioneering career dedicated to promoting the values of the Olympic Movement for over thirty years. In 1986, DeFrantz was the first ever American woman and the first ever African American elected to the IOC.

DeFrantz was already serving on the IOC Executive Board for a second time and was previously Vice President from 1997 to 2001. She is currently a member of four IOC Commissions - Finances, Legal Affairs, Olympic Channel and the Coordination for the Tokyo 2020 Games - and is also an honorary member of the Women in Sport Commission, after serving as chair from 1995-2014.

DeFrantz has played a key role in the successful LA 2028 bid as Senior Advisor for Legacy, focusing on how to maximize the benefits hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games for communities in Los Angeles. She has vast experience in delivering an impactful Games legacy for future generations having been Vice President of the Organizing Committee for the Los Angeles 1984 Games, and President of the LA84 Foundation for 28 years.

Over the past 30 years, the LA84 Foundation has invested more than $225 million across Southern California and continues to reach 30,000 children and young people annually through sports programs. LA 2028 now has an opportunity to dramatically expand Los Angeles' Olympic legacy, investing up to $160 million to fund youth sports programs in the years leading up to the Games.

LA 2028 Chairman Casey Wasserman said: "On behalf of everyone at LA 2028, I would like to congratulate Anita on her election as IOC Vice President. Anita has been an inspirational leader of the LA 2028 team, and we are extremely proud to see her elected as Vice President for the second time in what has been a magnificent career. She is a great role model for the younger generation and we could not wish for a better ambassador for the Olympic Movement in our country.

"Due to Anita's groundbreaking work, the LA 1984 Games set a new standard for putting Olympic Legacy into action. The achievements of the LA84 Foundation under Anita's leadership will serve as a blueprint and an inspiration to us as we look to kick-start a fresh Olympic and Paralympic legacy in the build-up to LA's first Games in a generation."
