LOS ANGELES - LA 2024 bid leaders today highlighted last night’s soccer match at the LA Memorial Coliseum between Real Madrid and Manchester City as further evidence of the City of Angels’ unique potential to grow Olympic and Paralympic sport in the US and around the world.

The match, which finished 4-1 in Manchester City’s favor, broke the Coliseum’s record crowd for soccer by attracting more than 93,098 fans. Bid leaders underlined this achievement as a sign of US fans’ “insatiable appetite for live sport.” LA 2024 has pledged to use LA’s unique dynamic sports presentation expertise and storytelling capabilities to help Olympic and Paralympic sports tap into the $250 billion US sports market, and capture the imagination of fans and future athletes.

The Coliseum, which would host the athletics competition as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies should LA be awarded a Games, once again displayed its capabilities of hosting a world-class event smoothly and sensationally.

LA 2024 CEO Gene Sykes said: “On behalf of LA 2024, I’d like to applaud the LA Coliseum as it celebrates another record-breaking night of world-class sport within its hallowed walls. The more than 90,000 fans that showed up last night to warmly welcome the two teams are emblematic of Los Angeles sports fans and American sports fans’ passion and insatiable appetite for live sport. As a global hub of storytelling and entertainment, LA is uniquely poised to help the Olympic and Paralympic Movement capitalize on fans’ passion for sport. This means not just tapping into the $250 billion US sports market, but creating lifelong Olympic and Paralmypic fans, and inspiring the next generation of athletes.”

The match between Real Madrid and Manchester City was part of the International Champions Cup, a series of pre-season friendly soccer matches held in cities across the globe. Real Madrid have spent the summer training at UCLA, LA 2024’s proposed Olympic and Paralympic Village.
