LA 2024 celebrates International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

Aarhus, Denmark - The LA 2024 bid team today joins the global celebration of the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace [IDSDP] 2017, supported by members of the LA 2024 Athletes’ Advisory Council including Olympic icon Michael Johnson.

Four-time Olympic Champion and LA 2024 Athletes’ Advisory Commission member Michael Johnson held a sports clinic for around 100 young athletes at the Aarhus Elite Sports Academy, Denmark. Supported by Denmark’s Olympic 400m hurdles silver medalist Sara Slott Petersen, Johnson led the young athletes in sprint drills, gave training tips and insights from his career, and discussed the importance of sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Movements in young people’s lives. The session ended with their contribution to the digital IDSDP #WhiteCard campaign, as Johnson, Petersen and the young athletes held up white cards to symbolize LA 2024’s solidarity with peace through sport efforts worldwide.

Twenty-one athletes are participating in the #WhiteCard campaign with LA 2024, including six-time Olympic medalist and LA 2024 Athletes' Advisory Commission member Katie Ledecky, four-time Paralympic medalist and LA 2024 Athletes’ Advisory Commission member Lex Gillette and members of the LA Galaxy squad.

LA 2024 CEO Gene Sykes said: “Today LA 2024 honors the efforts of people around the world - and organizations like Generations For Peace and Peace and Sport - to promote peace through the power of sport and the Olympic Values.

“But LA 2024’s goal is to follow our gesture today with action and impact. The work of the LA84 Foundation, created by the surplus from LA 1984, demonstrates that the Olympic and Paralympic Games can be a powerful engine of change. We and the Los Angeles community are excited about creating a new Olympic and Paralympic legacy for the next generation of Angelenos and about giving the Olympic and Paralympic Movements the strong financial foundations they need to continue growing their positive impact around the world.”

Programs across the United States are honoring IDSDP today, including: in California, Ball’N The ‘Golden Rule’ Way, Soccer Without Borders Juggle Challenge and ITTF World Table Tennis Day Santa Clara; in Colorado, US Adaptive Ski Team - #WhiteCard; in Kansas, ITTF World Table Tennis Day in Overland Park and Classroom Champions - #WhiteCard; and in New York, ITTF World Table Tennis Day in Ithaca and the UN Sport 4 Development Summit.
