LA 2024 celebrates One Year to the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018 with curling and karaoke street festival in Koreatown
Olympians, Paralympians and Angelenos come together for celebration underlining LA's Olympic passion and strong unity in diversity
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles’ Olympic spirit was on full display on Thursday night as Angelenos joined LA 2024 bid leaders, Olympians and Paralympians to celebrate the one year mark to the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018. Reflecting LA 2024’s commitment to delivering a welcoming Games environment bolstered by the City of Angels’ unity in diversity, the event was held in LA’s vibrant Koreatown neighborhood, home to the largest Korean population outside of Korea.
In a nod to Angelenos’ excitement for Pyeongchang 2018, but keeping in true LA fashion, the event featured a custom-made 4-lane street curling sheet in the center courtyard of Koreatown's iconic 1920's Chapman Market surrounded by local businesses. Attendees participated in street curling, guided by experts from the Hollywood Curling Club and Olympians and Paralympians, and sang their favorite songs at a pop-up karaoke stage.
LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said: “Tonight’s event reminds us that LA is uniquely positioned to warmly welcome the world in 2024, both because we are a city that lives and breathes sport, and because we are a city whose unity has been built on a bedrock of rich cultural diversity. It is with great pleasure that we were able to provide Angelenos with an opportunity to celebrate the upcoming Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games, and to try their hand at a beloved Olympic sport - curling - right in their backyard. Angelenos overwhelmingly support LA 2024, and today was an example of the citywide excitement and participation the Olympic family could expect from our city should the IOC elect LA as host city.”
In addition to highlighting Los Angeles' diverse communities, the event underscored the city's unified support of hosting the Games in 2024. A Loyola Marymount poll released last year showed that 88% of Angelenos support LA hosting the Games in 2024; and the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously - 13-0 - last month to give final approval for LA 2024, authorizing the City of Los Angeles to sign the Host City Contract with the International Olympic Committee for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
