New Year's Message from the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah

Rio 2016 gives sport the chance to bounce back

On behalf of the Olympic Council of Asia, it gives me great pleasure to wish everyone in the Asian Sports Family and Global Olympic Movement a Happy New Year 2016!

2016, of course, is an Olympic Games year, with all eyes focused on Rio de Janeiro from August 5-21.

The Olympic Games are always important, but I feel even more so in 2016 after the controversies that have rocked international sport around the world in recent months.

Rio 2016, therefore, gives the Olympic Movement a wonderful opportunity to restore the faith of the public in international sport, and remind everyone how glorious and inspirational sport can be at the highest level.

The Summer Games in Rio can put a smile back on the faces of sports-lovers around the world by showcasing the best of the best in the quest for Olympic gold.

We will see the pride and the passion of the athletes as they reach their dream and compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage - a reward for years of sacrifice and dedication.

We will see the joy and the enthusiasm of the spectators as they cheer athletes from all corners of the globe, from countries big and small.

And we will witness the exuberance and the excitement of our Brazilian hosts, as the Olympic Games visit South America for the first time in what promises to be a Rio Carnival of competition and culture.

Everyone connected with sport and the Olympic Movement, from athletes to coaches to officials to administrators, has a duty to make sure Rio 2016 shines and sparkles around the world.

From an OCA point of view, we will be celebrating our 5 th Asian Beach Games in September 2016, in Danang, Vietnam.

After a games-free 2015, this will be our first multi-sport games since the 4 th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, in November 2014, so it will enable us to renew old acquaintances and make new friendships.

Finally, I wish all our Asian athletes and NOCs a successful Rio 2016, and look forward to welcoming you all to Vietnam for our fifth Beach Games.

Happy New Year!
