PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games promotion at the 2015~2016 Asia League Ice Hockey (AL)

Seoul, September 16 - The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) promotes the 2018 Games to hockey fans at the 2015~2016 Asia League Ice Hockey (AL).

During the league which began on August 29 and will continue until April 2016, POCOG operates a public Photo Zone at the competition venues in the cities of Goyang, Incheon and Anyang in the Republic of Korea.

Formed in 2003, the Asia League Ice Hockey is a professional ice hockey league based in Northeast Asia, with nine teams from South Korea, Japan, China and Russia.

The 2015-2016 league is comprised of these teams: Oji Eagles (Tomakomai/Japan) / Nippon Paper Cranes (Kushiro/Japan) / H.C.Tochigi Nikko IceBucks (Nikko/Japan) / Tohoku Free Blades (Hachinohe/Japan) / Anyang Halla Ice Hockey Club (Anyang/Korea) / High1 Ice Hockey Team (Goyang/Korea) / Sang Mu Ice Hockey Team (Seoul/Korea) / China Dragon (Qiqihal/China) / Sakhalin (YuzhonoSakhalinsk/Russia).

Especially this year it will play a significant role in developing ice hockey in the Asian regions since the next two upcoming Olympic Winter Games will be held in Northeast Asia - PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022.
POCOG expects that promotional activities taking place during the league will make the public more familiar with ice hockey. Also, POCOG will utilize this opportunity to prepare for the 2018 Games by observing the facilities and operations of the competitions.

POCOG Spokesperson SUNG, Baik-you commented, “POCOG will endeavor to grow public interest and encourage participation in ice hockey, the centerpiece of winter sports, and expand the enthusiasm to the Olympic Winter Games in 2018.”

The national team of the Republic of Korea will make its Olympic ice hockey debut after earning an automatic berth as the host country of the Olympic Winter Games in 2018.

About POCOG

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) will host the XXIII edition of the Olympic Winter Games on 9-25 February 2018. Over 80 countries and 6,000 athletes are expected to take part in the first Olympic Winter Games to be held in Asia in 20 years. Seven sports comprising 15 disciplines will be on the official program.

The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will take place on 9-18 March 2018, with approximately 50 countries and 690 athletes competing. Five sports are on the Paralympic program.
