POCOG President Yang-ho Cho presents PyeongChang 2018's progress and activities supporting the Olympic Truce at the IOTF Executive Board Meeting

Seoul, September 4 - The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) President Yang-ho Cho attended the annual Executive Board Meeting of the International Olympic Truce Foundation (IOTF), held at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Head Office in Lausanne, Switzerland, on September 4 (CET).

During his presentation, POCOG President Yang-ho Cho explained, “So far, POCOG has completed two rounds of Olympic Truce Education, having trained 515 teachers and over 70,000 students in Korea. Also, over 1,500 children from 75 different countries have participated in our Dream Program for the past 12 years.”

IOTF Executive Board Meeting is an appointment where the annual activities and financial status of the IOTF and IOTC (International Olympic Truce Center) are briefed to its members. This year, Organizing Committees of the upcoming three Olympics - Rio 2016, PyeongChang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 - all had the opportunity to present their Olympic Truce Programs.

POCOG has developed 4 core pillars of its Olympic Truce Program:
Promote the ideas of the Olympic Truce to the Korean public to spread awareness about the concept.
Engage them by creating a forum for debate.
Cooperate with our counterparts in Tokyo and Beijing to help spread Olympic ideals.

In order to successfully execute its Program, POCOG will utilize 3 channels:
Culture - The Cultural Olympiad, Olympic Torch Relay and diverse local/ regional festivals, art contests and events that will play a vital role in promoting the ideals of the Olympic Truce.
Education - The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Education web portal will open in March 2016 and contain a separate section dedicated to the Olympic Truce. Also, Online/offline teacher workshops and the Dream Program will be ongoing.

Cooperation - Starting with PyeongChang 2018, 3 consecutive Olympic Games will be held in Northeast Asia. POCOG will utilize this excellent opportunity to foster greater peace and reconciliation in the regions in cooperation with Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022.

“PyeongChang is committed to the vision of Olympic Truce in our Games. As with all our preparations to ensure a successful Winter Games, we will deliver on our commitments and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula, North Asia and the world”, President Cho added.

* In the framework of promoting peace through sport and the Olympic ideal, the IOC established IOTF in July, 2000.  Thirty IOTF Executive Board members consist of President/member of the IOC, as well as the President of the Organizing Committee for each Olympic Games.

* Established by the IOTF, IOTC is responsible for the implementation of projects related to the global promotion of a culture of peace through sport and the Olympic ideal, in accordance with the principles and policies established by the Foundation.
