PyeongChang 2018 publishes the nation's first Sustainability Report blueprint for hosting Mega Events

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) announces that it has published the nation’s first Sustainability Report to be used as a blueprint for hosting International Mega Sporting Events such as the Olympic Games.

This report, entitled “PyeongChang 2018: Opening New Horizons for Sustainability- Furthering Benefits to Human and Nature.” is based on the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), G4, EOSS (Event Organizers Sector Supplement) Guidelines across numerous areas including the economy, environment and society. It also covers the PyeongChang 2018 vision and key messages for a sustainable Games management plan, and presents the foundation for sustainable plans with 2 and a half years left to the opening of PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The 5 key themes of the sustainable PyeongChang 2018 Games are;

1. Low Carbon Green Olympics - To accomplish “O2 Plus effects through low-carbon operations and resource circulation to stage Low Carbon Green Olympics

2. Stewardship of the Nature - Ensure permanence of an ecosystem by minimizing and recovering from ecological damages - To preserve the ecosystem and leave a sustainable legacy for PyeongChang and the Republic of Korea
3. Good Life - Build foundations for lasting prosperity of local economy and improved quality of life of the people in hosting regions - To build foundations for a healthier higher quality of life for the citizens in the hosting areas

4. Proud People with Tradition and Culture - Strengthen civil society and social capital through revitalization of local communities and promotion of cultural diversity and inclusion - To strengthen civil society and social capital through the revitalization of the local communities according to green practices

5. Opening to the World - Establishment of PyeongChang as a global city contributing to the promotion of Olympism and Winter Sports in Asia - To establish PyeongChang as a global sports hub with a focus on the protection and conservation of the environment

POCOG’s work has been carried out under the objective that this report will act as a key communications tool with all stakeholders to ensure socially responsible management.

POCOG President Yang-ho Cho commented “I believe that establishing a strategy for sustainable management and publishing the Sustainability Report will enable us to set up a well-balanced economic, social and environmental framework, and ensure the transparency of business operations. Ultimately, it will amplify the image of the world-class Organizing Committee both domestically and internationally.”

Contemporaneously, POCOG also established the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Guideline for sustainable Olympic Games Management, based on the ISO 26000 standards and UNGC (UN Global Compact).

The reports will be available online at the POCOG website within the month.
About POCOG
The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) will host the XXIII edition of the Olympic Winter Games on 9-25 February 2018. Over 80 countries and 6,000 athletes are expected to take part in the first Olympic Winter Games to be held in Asia in 20 years. Seven sports comprising 15 disciplines will be on the official program.
The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will take place on 9-18 March 2018, with approximately 50 countries and 690 athletes competing. Five sports are on the Paralympic program.
