The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games celebrates 1000-days to go with 'Happy PyeongChang, Promise for 1000 days' Special Event

Seoul, May 11- The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) announced today that it will celebrate its '1000-days to go' milestone to promote the nation's first Olympic Winter Games. Special events will take place on May 16th in cooperation with Host and Venue Cities to commemorate just 1000 days out from the Opening of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

First, POCOG plans to hold a special event dubbed 'Happy PyeongChang, Promise for 1000 days' to be held at Peace Square, Olympic Park, in Seoul, from 15:00 to 16:30. Some 4,000 participants will include POCOG President Yang-ho CHO, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Jong-deok KIM, Governor of Gangwon Province Moon-soon CHOI, representatives from the sports industry, officials from Host and Venue Cities, dignitaries from the national assembly and the public.

In order to magnify public interest and awareness about the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, POCOG will stage a special event filled with a number of exciting performances that depict the essence of the Games; PyeongChang 2018 Honorary Ambassadors including figure skating gold medalist Yuna KIM, artistic director of the Korean National Ballet Sue-jin KANG and former speed skating Olympian Kyou-hyuk LEE, will join together to participate in a commemorative ceremony showcasing their talents to highlight the passion and hope inspired for staging a successful Olympic Winter Games. That is not all, a whole list of performances will be staged by the Sejong Soloists string orchestra, another PyeongChang 2018 Ambassador; Chang-woo SEOK, the renowned painter with artificial hands; rising wheelchair dancer Yong-woo KIM; visually impaired Marimba player Kyung-ho CHUN and several K-POP artists will perform to raise the level of excitement about the Olympic and the Paralympics.

The '1000-days to go' event will continue until Sunday, May 17th, and provide various programs open to the public including the filming of a special TV program, winter sports related exhibitions, lucky draws and promotional booths featuring the Olympic sponsors. Visitors and spectators will have the opportunity to experience various winter sports even though it is springtime.

A POCOG official said, "Above the progress we've made so far, the 1000 days out event will show Korea and the world our passion and intentions to host a successful Olympic Winter Games." He added, "Through today's event we hope to set off a wave of excitement about the Olympic Movement and national pride throughout the country."

Apart from the main event that will take place in Seoul, the Host and Venue Cities also plan to participate in fanning the excitement about the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games during the lead up to the Games. In cooperation with POCOG, Gangwon Province will operate a special train from Seoul to Chuncheon, the Provincial Capital, where winter sports stars, youth players, and citizens can be seated together and share their inspirational stories. Special celebration performances will follow later in front of the Chuncheon Station featuring the theme of 'Dream of Gangwon Province, Future with Happiness' at 19:00.

In the Host City of PyeongChang, citizens will gather together at the PyeongChang Sports Complex and a symbolic performance will take place 'Make a wish with 1,000 pigeons' recalling the excitement and passion of winning the bid. In the Venue City of Gangneung, a special fireworks display, a music ensemble by the Metropolitan Choir as well as a Citizen Choir, and Smile Dance performances are all planned to be held at the Gangneung Olympic Park under the theme of '1,000 days out to the Winter Olympics, with citizens'. Another Venue City Jeongseon will join in the celebrations by unveiling a special sculpture for the 1,000-days to go milestone, showcasing Cultural Olympics performances and a special poem will be narrated about the hopes for delivering the successful Winter Olympic Games.

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) will host the XXIII edition of the Olympic Winter Games on 9-25 February 2018. Over 80 countries and 6,000 athletes are expected to take part in the first Olympic Winter Games to be held in Asia in 20 years. Seven sports comprising 15 disciplines will be on the official program.

The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will take place on 9-18 March 2018, with approximately 50 countries and 690 athletes competing. Five sports are on the Paralympic program.
