Farewell Winter - Welcome Spring!

Almaty, 13 April 2015. This past weekend, Almaty once again demonstrated the meaning of «Keeping it Real», its bid slogan to host the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The ski resorts celebrated «Farewell Winter» and the city celebrated «Welcome Spring» activities. The entire city celebrated the end of winter and the welcoming of spring by participating in - what else - skiing and snowboarding at the world class Shymbulak ski resort.  The city of Almaty welcomed Spring with the traditional “Volunteer Day”, where thousands of citizens come together annually to help clean the city and additionally plant thousands of trees.
«Farewell Winter»

As every year, the winter season in the Almaty region closed with a big celebration. Situated next to the iconic Medeo skating arena and just 15 minutes away from Almaty city centre, the Shymbulak ski resort, a training facility for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, bid farewell to the skiers with a fun filled party. The motto this year was «Hawaiian Skiing Party».

All skiing and snowboarding was free of charge and the slope-side restaurants were packed. Skiing was still perfect due to fresh snowfall over the past few weeks and a clear, sunny day for the festivities ensured the perfect «Bikini Race». The mass start of this race was one of the most entertaining of the day and in the finish area, thousands of people celebrated by dancing to the music of Almaty´s top DJs or sitting by the pool and enjoying the sunny day. Hundreds of young people organized flash mobs to bring even more spectators up to the resort.
«Welcome Spring»

At the same time, the city of Almaty welcomed Spring. As with every year the citizens cleaned their city and planted 4,000 new trees in a city. More than 170,000 people took part in the event, including artists, intellectuals, athletes and public figures. More than 70 trees were planted near the House of Veterans under the leadership of Mayor of the Almaty, Mr Akhmetzhan Yessimov.

"This is a very good indicator that so many Almaty citizens took part in the event. This proves people think about the environment and ecology, care about their beloved city and I am grateful for that" Mr Akhmetzhan Yessimov said. He also added that city Administration is going to enhance the environmental Green City Program with planting 30,000 trees annually.

Mr Andrey Kryukov, Vice-Chairman of Almaty 2022 said, "This weekend perfectly describes Almaty and its citizens by two events. We all love nature, we all love sport and we all love to have fun and, at the same time, we really take care of our city and our environment. People in the mountains enjoyed a fantastic day with real snow and sun; they were happy and had a great time. Another 170,000 people cleaned the city and planted thousands of new trees. And we do this every year. This gives true meaning to our slogan, «Keeping it Real». Almaty is an eco - friendly city and this creates a healthy environment for sport and for life - for all".
