Day 3 of the IOC Evaluation Commission visit in Almaty: If the Olympic City, which is a visionary and legacy driven project, is the heart of the Games then the Medeu Skating Oval within the Medeu cluster is the crown jewel. Without a doubt, Medeu, is one of the most iconic sports venues in the world and is only a stone's throw or quick cable car ride away from Shymbulak, Eurasia´s most prestigious and most-modern ski resort. IOC evaluation commission met by media.

Day 3 of the IOC Evaluation Commission visit was a jam-packed day, consisting primarily of venue tours. It started with the heart of the Games concept: the Olympic City, the centre point, of the Games plan. The Olympic City will be developed on a 142 hectare site of former agricultural land and is strategically located in north-east Almaty, at a maximum distance of 35 km from every competition venue and only 5.9 km from Almaty International Airport. Andrey Kryukov, Vice Chairman of the bid said: "This area is designed as the Olympic hub of Almaty 2022. In addition to the Olympic Village, the Olympic City will also contain the Almaty Olympic Arena, which will host the Figure Skating and Short Track competitions, the Olympic Hospitality Centre, the accommodation area for NOCs and IFs, the Workforce Village, the IOC Hotels, the MPC /IBC complex with the adjacent Media Village and the joint Media Transport Mall. In the long run, the area will serve to meet Almaty's still growing demand for affordable housing. In total, there will be 5,800 new apartments in this modern and vibrant urban development."

After a quick 20 minute ride through the lovely and picturesque Maloe Almatinskoye valley, the Medeu Skating Oval, one of the most iconic sports venues in the world, awaited the Evaluation Commission. Built in 1954, and home to more than 120 world records, the Medeu Skating Oval is an open multi ice sport venue for speed skating, figure skating, leisure and touristic skating. It is located at 1,700 m above sea level. The Medeu Mountain Hub is home to the spectator mountain transport hub, the Mountain Media Sub Center (MMSC), the Mountain transport hub for media, as well the Medeu Olympic Village

Shymbulak, Eurasia´s most prestigious ski resort is just a quick cable car ride away from Medeu. It was also part of the Soviet Union´s winter sport center. a ski resort ever since. Through permanent works, it will be adapted to Olympic requirements. All alpine speed events like Downhill and Super-G are planned to take place up here. The Tian Shan Mountains provide a stunning, picturesque, unbeatable backdrop for worldwide TV coverage.

NOC Secretary General, Timur Dossymbetov said, "Medeu and Shymbulak are not only sports venues for speed skating, training centres for athletes, but they also provide a platform for leisure, where thousands of people skate or ski during the weekend and enjoy this beautiful landscape. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this for us as a National Olympic Committee, as we are fostering the next generation of athletes for Kazakhstan. These two venues, with their storied tradition, will generate national role models for years to come. Increasingly, kids are learning to ski or skate and we could not be more thrilled. We are a young country that continues its development and growth. And I dare say with the long-term sports plan of our Republic and the string of big winter sports events like the Asian Games 2011, the Winter Universiade 2017 and hopefully the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2022 we will leave a great legacy of athletes."
