Almaty 2022: IOC Evaluation Commission Day 1

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission began its assessment of Almaty's bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic in 2022. Almaty 2022 was represented by the Minister of Culture and Sport of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Arystanbek Muhamediuly, the NOC President, Temirkhan Dosmukhambetov, the senior leadership of the bid committee, including the bid's two Vice Chairmen, Andrey Kryukov and four-time Olympian and Olympic Champion Vladimir Smirnov, and Yelena Khrustaleva, Silver Medalist from the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

Almaty 2022 presented its plans on the Candidature File themes Vision, Legacy & Engagement, Overall Concept of the Games, Sustainability, and the Olympic Village, in addition to what will be the first of three Sport and Venues presentations.

"The day was excellent," said bid Vice Chairman, Andrey Kryukov. He added, "We had an excellent opportunity to exchange information, and we learned a lot from the Evaluation Commission's great experience; I am very pleased with Almaty's first day of its first-ever IOC Evaluation Commission visit."

The Almaty 2022 bid team shared its extraordinary new vision for the Winter Games and discussed its true potential.  Kryukov continued, "Almaty 2022 can showcase the power of Olympic Legacy for an entire region. Our bid's vision is designed to adapt the Winter Games to fit our city and its existing needs and resources; this is a subtle, yet profound change from many past bids and it fits perfectly with the IOC's Agenda 2020 guidelines. That's what we mean by "Keeping it Real".

In line with Agenda 2020, one of Almaty's main areas of focus is on the athletes' experience. Olympian and Vice Chairman for the Bid, Vladimir Smirnov said, "Agenda 2020 is an opportunity to refocus the Games on the athletes' experience. As a four-time Olympian, I can assure you the athlete experience is first and foremost in our minds. For example, our Games concept is the most convenient one in over thirty years, that's a great benefit for the athletes -but it is only one of many in our plan. Planning a Games is like building a pyramid, but from the top down, and the top stone of the pyramid is the athletes."

This afternoon the Evaluation Commission will tour the Tabagan Cluster (Tabagan Snow Park and Tau Park Alpine), the Ak Bulak Cluster Nordic Arena, Ak Bulak Olympic Village and Ak Bulak Media Accommodation. The tour will conclude the IOC's first day in evaluating the Almaty 2022 bid.
