IOC President Bach discusses progress of PyeongChang 2018 preparations with Republic of Korea President Park

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and Republic of Korea President Park Geun-Hye met today at the Blue House in Seoul to discuss the status of preparations for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang.
The two leaders agreed on even closer cooperation between the Federal Government, the IOC and the Games Organising Committee (POCOG). President Park gave the IOC President her personal and her Government’s assurances to make PyeongChang 2018 a success.

It was the second meeting between the pair since the election of President Bach as head of the Olympic Movement in September 2013.

“These Games are a unique opportunity for the Republic of Korea to showcase itself to the world - not only as a new destination for winter sports, but also as a country of high technology and hospitality,” President Bach told President Park. “They should also help to further the international relations of all Koreans.”

President Bach also wished her and the South Korean team the best of luck at the 17th Asian Games, taking place in Incheon from 19 September to 4 October. He ended the meeting by offering an open invitation to President Park to visit the IOC headquarters and The Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

Accompanying President Bach at the Blue House were IOC Executive Board member and Coordination Commission Chair for PyeongChang 2018 Gunilla Lindberg, Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi, Korean Olympic Committee President Kim Jung-haeng, and POCOG President Cho Yang-ho.

During his three-day visit to the Republic of Korea, President Bach will also attend the Opening Ceremony of the Incheon Asian Games on Friday and deliver a keynote speech at the 33rd General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on Saturday.
