PyeongChang Celebrates "4 Years to Go" as National Government Actively Supports Games Preparation

SOCHI - On Sunday, 9 February 2014, the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games (POCOG) hosted a reception to celebrate PyeongChang Day, marking the “4 Years to Go” milestone, as well as to officially open PyeongChang House, located inside the Sochi Olympic Park.

The event was attended by more than 350 people, among which included many IOC members, NOC and IF representatives along with journalists from major media networks. Some of the highly noted guests were President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, Honorary President of the IOC Jacques Rogge, President of the International Paralympic Committee Sir Philip Craven, and President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko.

In his welcome speech, President J. S. Kim of the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee said, “This year will be a very critical time four years out to the staging of the Games in preparation for the success of PyeongChang2018. We will strive to host the best Games that will truly open up “New Horizons.”

IOC President Thomas Bach congratulated PyeongChang on its Games preparation, adding that the IOC will closely cooperate with the Organizing Committee for a successful Olympic Games in 2018. He also noted that the PyeongChang Games can benefit from Korean athletes’ strong performance in Sochi.

Over 250 POCOG employees and representatives of Gangwon Province are taking part in the Sochi Observer Programme during Games Time, learning in different functional areas (FAs), such as Competition, Venue Management, Transport, IT, Brand and Marketing among many others.

Meanwhile, President of the Republic of Korea Park Geun-hye said during a Chiefs of Staff meeting on Monday, 10 February that all eyes will be on PyeongChang following the Sochi Olympic Winter Games; therefore officials need to take a good note of the Games operations in Sochi in order to reflect any lessons on PyeongChang’s preparation of the Games. President Park also stressed that nationwide support, led by the Cabinet, should be beneficial for hosting a successful Olympic Games in 2018.

The PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (POCOG) will host the XXIII Edition of the Winter Games between February 9-25 2018. Over 80 countries and 6,000 athletes are expected to take part in the first Winter Olympics held in Asia in 20 years. Seven sports will be on the official program comprising 15 disciplines.

The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will take place right after the Olympics March 9-18 2018 with approximately 50 countries and 690 athletes competing.  Five sports are on the Paralympic program that will take place in the Olympic venues.
