Organizing Committee President Kim Jin-sun participates in the Torch Relay for 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games

The Organizing Committee President for the next Olympic Winter Games, President Kim Jin-sun of the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games participated in the Torch Relay of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

On February 5 at 13:29 (local time), President Kim received the Olympic torch at the 200m mark of Sochi's Lenina, krugovoe dvizhenie, vneshnyaya storona, Adler in the imminent surrounding area of Olympic Park.

After passionately being a messenger of the Olympic Torch, President Kim stated to reporters at a post-event interview that "This was a memorable legacy moment for me. The successful hosting of the Sochi Olympic Winter Games will have significant influence and provide great inspiration for the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games. The scope and depth of the preparations carried out by the Sochi Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee will certainly contribute to the overall success of the event," added Kim. 

President Kim reaffirmed his resolve for the success of the PyeongChang Games by stating, "With the thought that the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games will soon begin in just four years' time, I will closely study and observe the operation of the Sochi Games, in order to enhance and fine tune our own preparations in PyeongChang."

Since October 7, 2013, 14,000 runners have passed through 2,900 cities and towns throughout Russia with the Olympic torch, heightening the spirit of the Games. The Torch, after being carried through a long four-month relay, finally will enter the Olympic Stadium on February 7th. It will ignite the global winter festival during the entire course of the celebrations.

About PyeongChang 2018

The PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (POCOG) will host the XXIII Edition of the Winter Games between February 9-25 2018. Over 80 countries and 6,000 athletes are expected to take part in the first Winter Olympics held in Asia in 20 years. Seven sports will be on the official program comprising 15 disciplines.

The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will take place right after the Olympics March 9-18 2018 with approximately 50 countries and 690 athletes competing.  Five sports are on the Paralympic program that will take place in the Olympic venues.
