Seoul, Korea - On Thursday 21 November, the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games (POCOG) welcomed Thomas Bach, who led a high-level IOC delegation to the Republic of Korea on his first official visit as IOC president.

The newly-elected president visited POCOG's Seoul Office, where he met with the organizing committee's executive officers and other stakeholders of the Games, including J. S. Kim (formerly known as Kim Jin-sun), President and CEO of POCOG; Kim Jung-haeng, President of the Korean Olympic Committee; and Choi Moon-soon, Governor of Gangwon Province; as well as the mayors of the Host and Venue Cities, namely Choi Myung-hee of Gangneung City, Lee Seok-rae of PyeongChang City and Choi Seung-jun of Jeongseon City.

Apart from President Bach, the IOC delegation also included Gunilla Lindberg, Executive Board Member and Chair of the PyeongChang 2018 Coordination Commission; Christophe De Kepper, Director General; and Gilbert Felli, Olympic Games Executive Director. Moon Daesung was also present at the meeting in his capacity as IOC member from Korea.

"President Bach's visit to POCOG clearly demonstrates his special attention and commitment to the Republic of Korea and PyeongChang 2018 in particular," said POCOG President Kim in his welcome remarks. He presented an appreciation plaque to the IOC president, in honour of his first official visit to Korea.

During his hour-long visit, President Bach was briefed by POCOG Vice President and Secretary-General Moon Donghoo, on the progress in PyeongChang's preparation for the Olympics. Bach also made a speech to the entire staff of the organizing committee, and answered questions from inquisitive staff members who asked about the secrets of his success and his strategy for expanding the Olympic Movement in Asia.

"When the Olympic Flag will be handed over to PyeongChang in the Closing Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the eyes of the world will be on you. From this moment on, you will know that the Olympic flag belongs to you and the Olympic spirit will grow even more all over Korea," said the IOC president, adding "we are really very confident that you will deliver the great Games to Korea and to the world."

Like the icing on the cake, Bach's visit provided a rare opportunity for the entire workforce of PyeongChang 2018 to take group photos with the IOC president.

President Bach capped his visit to Seoul with a courtesy call to Park Geun-hye, President of the Republic of Korea.
