ISTANBUL 2020 TAKES LEGACY LESSONS FROM MOSCOW

Chairman Hasan Arat praises ‘vibrant sports community’ as he departs IAAF World Championships for Asian Youth Games in Nanjing

Moscow; 14 August 2013: Istanbul 2020 Chairman, Hasan Arat, today cited Moscow's Luzhniki Olympic Complex - the venue for the IAAF World Championships - as a prime example of effective legacy planning, and pledged that the Istanbul 2020 Olympic Park would deliver the same lasting impact to the local community.

The Luzhniki Olympic Complex was the main sports hub for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Thirty-three years on, it is still host to professional football, volleyball, athletics and ice hockey, and offers a host of community sports facilities, including beach volleyball, tennis, swimming and multi-sports arenas. The Luzhniki Stadium, at the heart of the Olympic Complex, is the venue for the 2013 IAAF World Championships, and in 2018 it will host the FIFA World Cup final.

"Just from spending a few days here, I can see that the Luzhniki Olympic Complex is at the centre of a vibrant sports community. On Sunday afternoon, you could see hundreds of people playing volleyball or tennis, riding bikes and enjoying the facilities. Then on Sunday evening, you could watch Usain Bolt win the World 100 metres title. That combination of elite and community sport is what we will deliver with the Istanbul 2020 Olympic Park.

"Our Olympic Park will be the beating heart of a brand new 'live-work-play' community of 600,000 people. It will attract World Championships and World Cups because the arenas we build will be state-of-the-art, but just as importantly it will provide low- and no-cost sports facilities for the people of Istanbul. The Istanbul 2020 Olympic Park will transform sport in Turkey from grass-roots to elite level."

The seamless activation of the Olympic Park's legacy mode post-Games will provide essential amenities for Istanbul's highly populated and growing western region. Of the 11 sporting venues situated in the Olympic City Cluster, eight newly built permanent venues and one upgraded venue will serve post-Games as multi-use stadiums; community sports clubs and leisure centre; and fully accessible Olympic training centres, for high performance and community sport and Para-sport. The two remaining venues in the Park will be temporary.

As well as providing sporting facilities, the Olympic Park will provide much needed affordable housing for the people of Istanbul. The Olympic and Paralympic Village, and the Media Village, located minutes away from the Olympic Stadium, will be converted into 8,000 apartments as part of TOKI's mandate to provide a total of 2.5 million new housing units. The newly built International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre will be employed as a commercial centre.
