UIPM is excited to launch it's latest addition to it's event calendar, the Mixed Relay World Cup Series which will make its debut in 2013.

The Modern Pentathlon mixed relay works by one man and one women from the same country competing in tandem (in depth explanation can be found below)

This Mixed Relay World Cup Series, is a result of the immense interest that the athletes favorite discipline has created in the media, in the past 3 years.

The mixed relay made its debut on the senior circuit at the 2010 World Championships after its successful premier at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and has been a regular fixture at all World Championships since.

UIPM hopes, that the event will keep on growing and not only be a medal event at the Youth Olympic Games, like it was at 2010 and will be at Nanjing 2014, but a medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games as well.

"UIPM is thrilled about this new concept in 2013. Everyone loves the mixed relay, so hopefully we will have the mixed relay in the program for the Rio 2016. It shows how a man and women can work together, learn off each other for the best of their nation" stated UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann.

The Mixed Relay World Cup Series will work by:
• Maximum of 16 pairs per event
• Each country can submit a maximum of 2 pairs if there are remaining spots in the 16
• The top 12 pairs qualify for the World Cup Final through the Mixed Relay World Cup Series Ranking (best 3 results are added together)
• Countries can change their pairs throughout the World Cup Series
• Generous prize money is on offer for the Mixed Relay World Cup Final medal winners.

The inaugural 2013 Mixed Relay World Cup Series schedule:
• UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #1 Palm Springs, USA 24 February 2013
• UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #2 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 24 March 2013
• UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #3 Chengdu, China 21 April
• UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #4 Budapest, Hungary 12 May 2013
• UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup Final Nizhny - Novgorod, Russia 2 June 2013

For those of you not familiar of how the mixed relay works, here are the basic rules:
• Each mixed relay pair is made up from a man and women from the same country.
• Fencing: Each pair fences against each other in a round robin, with the man fencing the man and the women fencing the women from the opposing team.
• Swimming: Each pair swims in a 2x100 meter relay.
• Riding: Both team members take it in turn to ride a 9 obstacle course.
• Combined event: All the pairs points are tallied from the previous 3 disciplines and the pair with the most points starts first. The women from the pairs starts first and completes 2 rounds of the combined event which involves 2 shooting series (hitting the target 5 times) and 2 rounds of 800m running. Once this is completed, the man then has to do the same and whoever crossed the finishing line first is the winner.
