SPORTACCORD CONVENTION GETS HIGH MARKS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
LAUSANNE, Switzerland - SportAccord Convention announced today the release of a comprehensive report on the sustainability of the 2012 event in Québec City. The report examines both environmental and social indicators and describes the 10th Annual SportAccord Convention at the Québec City Convention Centre in May 2012 as a “first-in-its-class sustainable event.”
The 54-page report, prepared by certified eco-advisory firm Takt-etik, states: “With partners going beyond the regular sustainability practices, it is no wonder that many successful initiatives were put in place and that this edition of the event will provide a benchmark for events.”
A few highlights of the report on the event in Québec City are as follows:
• Over 73% off all waste produced by the event was either recycled (50%) or composted (23%), leaving a mere 27% of landfill-bound waste.
• By recycling paper, cardboard, plastic and metal the Convention made significant following savings in water (96,766 litres), energy (34.6 gigajoules), wood (8,023 tons) and GHG emissions (9.1 tons).
• Local volunteers committed more than 1,000 hours of their time on various initiatives.
Over the years, SportAccord Convention has consistently worked to hold the annual summit of world sport in the most sustainable way. In shaping the event’s sustainability programme, SportAccord Convention has worked closely with CH2M Hill, its long-standing Sustainability & Legacy Partner.
The Eco-Friendly Event Report is available for download at the SportAccord Convention website at http://www.sportaccordconvention.com.
SportAccord Convention will continue its sustainability efforts when the 11th annual Convention takes place in the Russian city of Saint-Petersburg from May 26-31, 2013.
A discounted rate is in effect for delegates booking their places early via the website.
Held in a different city every year, SportAccord Convention is a unique opportunity for international sporting leaders to engage with business, featuring a dynamic exhibition as well as the annual general meetings of governing bodies of world sport.
