FINA Coaches Clinic to offer unmissable insight

The world’s top swimming coaches have been lined up to offer their insights over the course of the two-day ‘FINA Gold Medal Swimming Coaches Clinic’ during the 2012 FINA Convention in Moscow, Russia.

A total of 11 coaches from six different countries - all of whom helped to steer an athlete to gold medal success in the water at the London 2012 Olympic Games - will speak to delegates interested in developing elite swimming athletes on October 29-30.

A total of eight hour-long presentations will take place over the two days, with keynote addresses also provided from Frenchman Christian Donze on October 29 and then American Bob Bowman, the coach of Michael Phelps, the most successful Olympian of all time, on October 30.

The Clinic has been scheduled to allow for breaks of at least half an hour between each session, allowing for time to discuss the many varying techniques and tips presented by the speakers who are sure to provide a comprehensive overview of coaching practices in aquatics.

About 150 Russian swimming coaches from across the country have already confirmed their attendance at the event, but the Clinic will also attract swimming coaches of all levels from across the world, illustrating swimming’s global outlook.

On day one, Romain Barnier, the coach of London 2012 50m sprint freestyle gold medal-winner Florent Manaudou, will kick off the Clinic, and then South African Graham Hill, who coached Chad le Clos to 200m men’s butterfly glory, will share the stage for the next presentation with Haitao Lui, who helped Chinese compatriot Jiao Liuyang to victory in the 200m women’s butterfly.

Australian Matthew Brown, who steered Emily Seebohm to 100m backstroke success, American Todd Schmitz, who helped Missy Franklin to two London 2012 gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke, and Xu Guoyi, the Chinese coach of 200m and 400m individual medley gold medal-winning Shiwen Ye, will speak before French aquatics federation technical director Donze will wrap up day one with a keynote address.

Day two will start with Dirk Lange from Germany giving a presentation on the coaching strategies that helped Cameron van der Burgh to gold in the 100m breaststroke. Ferenc Kovácshegyi of Hungary will offer a fascinating perspective as the coach of Eva Risztov, who claimed victory in the gruelling 10km open water race, and Yuri Sugiyama - coach of 15-year-old US swimming sensation Katie Ledecky, who won the 800m freestyle event at London 2012 - will take to the stage for a highly-anticipated presentation.

Day two will reach an unmissable conclusion with legendary American swimming coach Bowman telling delegates how he helped Phelps to a world record 18 gold medals across three Olympic Games - including four in London.
