Today marks 44 years since the first-ever Special Olympics World Games were held July 20, 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Special Olympics has come quite far since then.

In 2011, Special Olympics served 4,004,415 athletes worldwide, an increase of more than 257,946 athletes from 2010.

In the past year, Special Olympics achieved a 6.9 percent athlete growth rate.


64.7 percent of our athletes are of school age (8-21), while the adult athlete population (22+) constitutes 33.4 percent of all Special Olympics athletes.

In 2011, Special Olympics served 75,054 individuals ages 2-7.


Similar to 2011, Special Olympics top sports include athletics, football, basketball, bowling, aquatics and bocce.

More than half a million athletes (226,076) and partners (320,728) are now engaged in Unified Sports opportunities, a 9 percent increase from 2010.

28,896 athletes serve in leadership positions offered through Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs).

53,601 competitions were organized around the world in 2011; an increase of 7.6 percent from 2010.

More than 306,652 coaches supported Special Olympics athletes during 2011, representing a 12.1 percent annual growth rate.


Cash revenue generated by Special Olympics Programs increased by 2.2 percent from a 2010 and amounted to more than 257 million USD in 2011.

In-kind revenue increased by 4.3 percent from 2010 to reach more than 68 million USD.


Special Olympics Programs hosted 765 Healthy Athletes events in 2011 and conducted 116,900 athlete screenings.


Special Olympics has 225 accredited programs in 170 countries.
