Chengdu, China: 27 May 2012 - Ilia Frolov (RUS) has shown that he is still one of the best modern pentathletes on the planet by winning the 2012 World Cup Final in Chengdu, China.
The 2008 World Champion simply had too much speed in the combined event for Woojin Hwang (KOR) who held on for silver and to the thrill of the massive local crowd veteran Zhongrong Cao (CHN) came from nowhere to win bronze.
"I did not think during the run, but I knew I had won it by the 2nd lap, it was a very easy run" stated Frolov. "I knew Hwang was not as strong in running as me so I was confident in overtaking him (which he did comfortably on the 2nd lap).
My shooting this year has been a big success and it was again today which was key. Let's see now about the Olympics, as we have a very strong Russian team and it's a tough decision."
"During the run I knew I could not stay ahead of Frolov, he is too fast" stated an overwhelmed Hwang. "It helps we are a part of such a strong Korean team. We are the future and we all help each other a lot. I now hope this is enough to secure my place at the Olympic Games"
Cao was the star attraction all day, with his loyal Chinese supporters: "There was a lot of pressure on as there was so many fans here. But I am very happy and relieved to have taken a medal. On the last running lap I did not know what position I was in so I just ran as hard as I could and thankfully it was enough for bronze."
Serguei Karyakin (RUS) continued his love affair with Chengdu (gold 2010 World Championships and silver 2011 World Cup 4) with a well-deserved 4th place, just ahead of Nick Woodbridge (GBR) who stated:  "I came here to practice some elements of my fencing, but it didn't work and I finished low down. So it is very satisfying to move up to 5th after a poor start. I am in the form of my career, and my next aim is to win a medal in front of my home crowd at the London Olympics."
The 2012 World Cup final concludes the Olympic qualification period, so athletes now face a nervous wait to see if they can clinch one of the world rankings positions on offer, announced on June 1.
One of those athletes that will be nervously waiting is Justinas Kinderis (LTU). However the big Lithuanian did himself a lot of favours today by coming from 20th position to sneak into 6th in the combined event.
"I would like to thank our dear Chinese friends for producing such a fantastic end to the ever popular World Cup Series" said UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann. "It is fitting that the last UIPM event held before the Olympic Games was held in the stadium dedicated to our founder Pierre de Coubertin, in the year we are celebrating 100 years in the Olympic Games which he created concluded President Schormann."
