Mhairi Spence (GBR) is the new Modern Pentathlon World Champion today in Rome, Italy.
The Brit managed to out sprint triple World Champion Amelie Caze (FRA) who dropped back to 4th with Qian Chen (CHN) coming from nowhere to snatch silver and Samantha Murray (GBR) holding on for a well-deserved bronze.
"This is unbelievable, I have dreamt about this quite a lot stated Spence. I knew if I won a medal today I would be going to the Olympic Games, and I won the whole thing" stated Spence.
"I was running and I could see Caze just there. I thought of all the painful running I did in the past 6 months and though it can't hurt more than that and I am now World Champion, I just can't believe it."
Spence was always in the hunt throughout the day, finishing 3rd in the fence and 12th in the swim, but it was her perfect ride of 1200 and her final shoot that put her in the driving seat. Spence left the final shoot in 2nd and was able to hold off all her challengers and win the historic gold.
2009 World Champion, Qian Chen came from nowhere to steal the silver medal: "I just kept on running and running and running not even thinking about a medal. Then the last 500 meters I saw the leaders were not too far ahead so I went for it. I can't believe it that I was able to win silver, I am so proud."
Like Spence, Murray's bronze medal means that she will be living her dream by competing at the 2012 Olympic Games. "I am unbelievably happy. I ran so hard and it was enough, I won bronze, I am in the Olympic Games, this has been the best day of my life."
Triple World Champion Amelie Caze dropped back to 4th despite equalling the fencing World Record earlier in the day and Olympic Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER) recovered from her poor start to move up to 5th ahead of Yane Marques (BRA). Anastaysia Prokopenko's (BLR) 7th position was enough to claim the 3rd Olympic qualification position behind Spence and Murray as the rest of the athletes above her had already secured their Olympic qualification.
On the back of Spence's and Murray's heroics Great Britain won the teams event, Hungary grabbed the silver and China a well-deserved bronze.
In attendance of the 52nd Modern Pentathlon World Championships was IOC Vice President Dr Thomas Bach where he stated: "The introduction of laser shooting and the combined event hs made the sport much more dynamic and excited for the entire sporting world. I am very pleased that the athletes have now accepted this new innovation as well."
The Women's Final was the 6th day event in the week long 52nd Modern Pentathlon World Championships. Next up is the Men's Final tomorrow.
