SPORTACCORD'S E-LEARNING PROGRAMME IS PART OF INTERPOL WORKSHOP

Lausanne, 17 April 2012 - The first INTERPOL-FIFA Anti-Corruption Initiative National Workshop held in Finland last week aimed at increasing awareness of the risks of corruption in football, the strategies used by perpetrators and the methods available to detect and counteract them.

SportAccord’s e-learning programme released in January this year at was presented as one of the tools to be used within the framework of a ten year agreement between FIFA and INTERPOL to promote the integrity of sport.

The two-day training workshop gathered thirty stakeholders: players, referees, law enforcement officials, etc. It was prepared collaboratively with the Finnish Police and the Football Federation of Finland. The latter was shaken last year with a match-fixing scandal discovered following the arrest of the Singaporean Raj Perumal, who had been fixing games worldwide for several years for the purpose of criminal betting syndicates in Asia.

Betting related corruption was one of the core issues debated during the workshop, as attested by the presence of Risto Nieminen, CEO of the World Lotteries Association, who gave an insight into both the specific risks presented by illegal betting and the means to better monitor the problem and promote responsible betting.

A series of workshops are planned by INTERPOL to improve awareness and understanding of corruption in sport, the strategies used by its perpetrators and the methods to detect and counteract them.

SportAccord’s Global Programme to Stop Match-fixing in Sports has been tailored specifically for football players and officials by SportAccord in collaboration with its development partner, SportBusiness for use in the INTERPOL Programme. SportAccord fully encourages all sports federations to develop a proactive information policy towards their leaders and athletes regarding the threats posed.
