Kiteboard Tour Asia: Asian Old Skool Kiteboard Champions Crowned
Mui Ne Vietnam sees the Asian Kiteboard Championship second tour round and the crowning of Asia’s first ever Old Skool discipline Champions
HONG KONG: The Kiteboard Tour Asia (KTA) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion to the C2Sky Freestyle Raid and Asian Old Skool Championships that were held 15-19 February 2012 at Mui Ne Vietnam.
Although the variable wind conditions over the week meant more time for the riders on the beach than the water, when it did appear it was hardcore action all the way and results were safely recorded in all the event disciplines - Freestyle, Old Skool and Big Air!
Neil Godbold, KTA founding director said:
Without a title sponsor for this event we had been concerned if we could still pull it off, but in the end this round showed us all that the passion for kiteboard competition is a strong as ever in Asia. This was a fantastic grassroots up effort from all concern; the riders, local sponsors, the tour brand sponsors and our own KTA team - nice one to all concern.
In this round of the KTA Asian Tour the usual Olympic potential discipline of course racing stepped aside to allow riders to focus solely on the jumps and trick side of the sport with the second round of the Asian Freestyle Tour and the first every Asian Old Skool Championships.
To summarize the difference between these two acrobatic disciplines the freestyle rider focuses their efforts on fast low combinations of technical tricks that owe a lot to wakeboarding for inspiration, whereas Old Skool is for many the essence of kiteboarding with its high flying board-off tricks and multi-rotational moves.
Certainly the latter is a big crowd pleaser and with the wind strength reaching 30kts on the main competition day in Mui Ne no one left disappointed and Asia became the first region in the world to appoint champions in this kiteboard disciple.
For the KTA though competitions are not just about crowning champions, they have always been about encouraging new riders into the sport by bringing pro-level events to their home locations.
The KTA Vietnam certainly was that and ticked all the boxes even if the wind was less than co-operative throughout the week.
The full event package was completed by generous local support providing equally as exciting evening entertainment for the riders as the riders provided for everyone else out on the water. All beautifully co—ordinated by the KTA local organisers and event hosts C2Sky (http://www.c2skykitecenter.com) one of Mui Ne's longest established and highly respected kiteboard centres.

About KTA
The KTA was formed to give an international platform to the skills and talents of kiteboarders throughout Asia, and to bring professional level competition and training to the region. The KTA launched the first international tour of its kind in Asia in September 2009 visiting five countries over the 2009/2010 season.
Following the success of its first tour the KTA is back for the 2010/11 season with a further five stop Asian Tour and a new range of national level, stand alone, Open Events.
The KTA is open to everyone from anywhere, amateur and pro riders alike. It is the one and only officially Asian continental tour sanctioned by the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), the kitesurfing world governing body, which in turn is the class representative to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) sanctioning international sailing competitions from world championship to Olympic levels.
KTA's philosophy is to start slow and grow steadily. They are focused on giving homegrown riders the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of being part of an international competition scene. The KTA hopes to provide a stepping-stone for the region's best riders onto the World tour scene by giving them the full experience of high level competition at a more local level, and who knows, maybe in the process discover a future world champion!
The KTA Asian Tour will result in tour stop event champions, the eventual overall KTA open tour champions, and the Asian champions and world rankings in the IKA and ISAF sanctioned classes of freestyle and kite racing.
