FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
'SportAccord supports a groundbreaking effort in Child Protection'
SportAccord, Beyond Sport, Spirit of Soccer, streetfootballworld and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) have come together to take a huge step forward in addressing child protection all around the world, with the launch of a Child Protection Pledge and Code of Practice during the recent Beyond Sport Summit in Cape Town.
All SportAccord members are encouraged to ensuring that child protection becomes an integral part of any sporting activity from grassroots to the elite level.
The code of practice provides a list of practical actions that will help a federation to meaningfully initiate and develop a child protection approach. The actions can be established over time, and the depth to which each one is delivered can be developed gradually. What’s important is that a plan is designed to move towards a comprehensive, locally-driven approach encompassing all the actions in the code. The pledge is an action that can be applied immediately within a federation to establish the dialogue between staff and young people about child protection issues that will be necessary to implement the code of practice. The pledge outlines a simple set of rules to promote safe and positive behaviour in sport. They are relevant to any adult who works with children in a sporting capacity.
Beyond Sport will be adding a new child protection pledge to the entry process for the Beyond Sport Awards in 2012, ensuring that any entrants to the process will either have or must implement a child protection process. SportAccord has a strategic alliance with Beyond Sport for their annual Sport Federation or Governing Body of the Year Award. Other measures taken by the organisations committing to the pledge include streetfootballworld providing training in child protection through an online webinar, offering guidance and support in the development of child protection policies, with Spirit of Soccer and CEOP also playing crucial roles in the implementation of the pledge.
