The official London 2012 mascots Wenlock and Mandeville are back in cinemas with their third animated film ‘Wenlock and Mandeville’s Rainbow Rescue’. The film is out today and will be shown exclusively at ODEON Cinemas on 373 screens in more than 100 locations across the UK, before selected family movies until the 23 December.
The latest release continues to follow Wenlock and Mandeville’s journey to the Games and sees them help a school create a library bus after their school library is destroyed in a storm. The film is based on a true story - the film’s writer, British author Michael Morpurgo was inspired when he visited and Rosendale Elementary school in West Dulwich whose library is inside a double-decker bus.
‘Wenlock and Mandeville’s Rainbow Rescue’ features CGI animated versions of Olympic and Paralympic athletes Louis Smith, Zoe Smith, Victoria Pendleton, Shelly Woods and Tom Aggar and includes narration by English TV and film personality Stephen Fry.
Earlier this month Michael Morpurgo held a writing workshop for children from schools in London to develop ideas for the fourth and final film. The workshop took place in the Rosendale Elementary school library bus. The children took part brainstorming, writing and storyboarding activities as well working with music composer Thomas Hewitt Jones on the soundtrack. The final film will also be shown in ODEON Cinemas, from 1 - 31 May 2012.
Michael Morpurgo said: ‘We have these extraordinary characters Wenlock and Mandeville who are not only encouraging young people to take up sport but are inspiring the next generation of story tellers and writers.’
Wenlock and Mandeville also appear on learning resources available to teachers through the London 2012 Education programme ‘Get Set’ and the costume characters have together made over 200 appearances across the UK. People have ‘customised’ their own version of the mascots as just one of the interactive mascot games on the mascot website and 23,700 people follow Wenlock and Mandeville on Twitter and Facebook. The mascots feature on over 25% of official London 2012 products. Visit for more details.
