Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) has capped a memorable year by defending her Junior World Championships title in front of a large crowd at Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Kovacs used all her experience to out shoot and out run the winner of the fencing Alise Fakhrutdinova (RUS) and Freyja Prentice (GBR) who had to settle for silver and bronze respectively in the combined event.

Kovacs had a solid start to the day finishing 5th in the fencing behind silver medallist Fakhrutdinova. A typically strong swim by the Hungarian and then only 2 rails down in the ride meant the 21 year old started 1 second behind Fakhrutdinova in the Combined Event. Kovacs shot brilliantly to overtake the Russian in the 1st shoot and never looked back to repeat her performance of a year ago and become the Junior World Champion.

Kovacs, who also won the silver medal at this year’s Senior World Championships stated: “I am very happy about this second junior world title which came in such a hard competition with strong opponents focused on winning the medals. This was my hardest season ever and this is the best end possible.”

The fencing superstar Fakhrutdinova: “I am so happy as it's my most important result at international level. The key to this medal was my fencing performance, which gave me a big lead on my opponents. I also produced my best combined event performance today which I am thrilled about.”

Prentice who added a bronze to her silver medal last year: I thought I lost my chance for a medal with a nightmare second shoot. This got me so frustrated that I put everything into my last 2 running legs which got me back to the bronze medal position.

Prentice’s bronze medal led to Great Britain winning the gold teams medal ahead of Ukraine who won the silver and Kovacs’s Hungary snared the bronze.
