Lesun looking for a gold end to the year

After a scintillating day of Pentathlon by the women today in the streets of Sicily, we can now look forward to the Men’s Champion of Champions final tomorrow.

All eyes will be on World #1 Aleksander Lesun (RUS) who will desperately want to turn his silver medal year (silver at World Cup Final, World Championships and World Cup #2) into a gold one by becoming the best of the best here in Italy. A typically strong fencing performance from the Russian will go a long way to ensuring this.

However With a very strong field, it will not be easy for Lesun. After a disappointing 2011, by his high standards, David Svoboda (CZE) will want to finish the year on a high. He stated “I am very relaxed about tomorrow. It will be great to have a good result year to give me a jump start for the important 2012 Olympic year.”

2010 World Champion Serguei Karyakin (RUS) who relinquished his World Crown to his team mate Andrei Moiseev in Russia last month will be looking for revenge. After finishing last year recognised as the best in the world, he will want the same this year at this prestigious event. However he knows he will need to have improved fencing than what he showed at the World Championships if he is going to win gold.

World Cup Final Champion Robert Kasza (HUN) is also confident heading into tomorrow event. He has shown brilliant form all year which resulted him securing his Olympic qualification position at the World Cup Final and also a career high 5th place at the World Championships and a World Championships relay gold. He will want to finish this dream year on a high.

Another favourite will be Pavlo Tymoschenko (UKR) who started the year with a bang, winning World Cup #1 and silver at World Cup #3 which resulted him rising to the World #1 position for a week. His form then deteriorated as he missed the final at the European Championships and had a disappointing World Championships. He will want to prove to himself that he is still one of the best in tomorrow’s event.

In 2011 Korea has created their mark on international Pentathlon. They won a gold medal at World Cup #4, which was their 1st international senior medal for 20 years. They followed that up with a silver medal at the men’s World Championships relay in Moscow. Such a strong year has resulted in 3 men qualifying for tomorrows event, the most of any nation. They will see this as a golden opportunity as the chance to finish their breakthrough season on a high.
