Aurora, IL: Several LSU Football players have been suspended. Three player tested positive for smoking synthetic marijuana.
The To the Maximus Foundation is charged with educating the public about synthetic marijuana. The foundation has received national coverage in the past few months, due to the death of the founders son, Max Dobner. We have been very active in the western suburbs of Chicago to procure the passage of ordinances. Our main goal is to educate and inform and in that arena we have produced literature for the general public and are working on first responder pamphlets. Synthetic marijuana is a very dangerous drug and we are confronted with unique challenges because most people consider marijuana a relatively safe drug. We use the term ‘poison sprayed on leaves’ to describe fake pot because too many people think of it as a safe drug because of the word ‘marijuana’ used to describe it.
The truth is that producers are taking various plant materials and spraying it with any number of dozens of chemicals that have not yet been tested and the DEA considers a schedule 1 drug. The DEA has banned synthetic marijuana, but the ‘bad guys’ have gone to the laboratory and made a molecular change to the chemical, allowing it to be sold legally in most states. There are several bills in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate designed to close up this loop hole, the most promising of which is HR 1254, which is very nearly ready for a house vote within the next few weeks. Urine tests to detect the chemicals used to produce fake pot have just recently been released and they only detect a few of the many dozens of chemicals available for production.
To the Maximus Foundation is named in honor and memory of Max Dobner, who died on June 14, 2011 at the age of 19. On the day of this death, Max, usually a cautious and responsible person, entered a local tobacco shop with a friend. There, they purchased a legal substance, a synthetic drug sold as “potpourri” but smoked by teens. They discussed how it must be safe because it was legal. This substance is known to cause frightening side effects such as rapid heart rate and palpitations, cardiac arrest, vomiting, paranoid delusions, panic attacks, and hallucinations. Shortly after using this substance, Max got into a car, drove at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, and ultimately barreled through an intersection, hit a wall, went airborne, and crashed into a house in North Aurora, IL. Max died from a blunt force trauma to the head.
Soon after the accident, Karen Dobner founded the To the Maximus Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to eradicate, educate and communicate! Our most important charge is to educate the community about the dangers of synthetic marijuana. It is also our goal to eradicate this drug from the legal market. And finally, we are communicating with legislators in our fight to make the sale and use of synthetic marijuana illegal throughout the country.
As fast as local, state, and federal governments draw up legislation banning fake pot, aka poison sprayed on leaves, the ‘bad guys’ go to the laboratory and make molecular changes to their products and have them on the market sometimes before the bans are even in effect. Law enforcement is almost always behind the ball on this issue while our youth are being harmed and dying.
Max’s mother, Karen Dobner, does not want another family to go through the pain of losing a child in this manner.
