Andrei Moiseev (RUS) has secured his status of one of Modern Pentathlon's all-time greats by becoming World Champion here is Moscow Russia. Moiseev never gave anyone a chance, as he crossed the line ahead of Aleksander Lesun (RUS) who grabbed silver and Adam Marosi (HUN) who won a much deserved bronze.

Moiseev led the entire day, as he won the fencing, finished 6th in the swim and only knocked down one rail in the ride which ensured he started 1st in the combined event, a position that he never let go to the thrill of the packed crowd at the 1980 Olympic stadium.

Moiseev who now has 2 Olympic gold medals, 2 European Championship titles and now an World Championships crown said: "It was amazing for me to win this gold in Moscow, the crowd helped me so much. I did wonder if I was ever going to win a World Championships after waiting for so long. Now I will focus on improving my shooting even more to ensure gold in London 2012."

Lesun, who has repeated his silver medal performance from last year said: "I didn't expect this medal after bad results at the European Championships and problems with my back. I needed this medal to qualify for the Olympic Games and am relived I have done it. I felt I got better with every discipline today and excelled in my running. However in every discipline there was mistakes and room for improvement."

2009 World Champion Marosi was ecstatic with his medal that ensured his 2012 Olympic qualification: "I am so relieved to be qualified" said Marosi. "After the fencing I thought I had a 5% chance of a medal. However I had confidence in my endurance events (running and swimming) and had the best ride of my life which put me back in contention. This medal means as much to me as my gold at the 2009 World Championships."

Ilia Frolov (RUS) managed 4th place to cap off a fantastic day for Russia who also secured the teams medal ahead of Hungary and Italy.

UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann stated that: "UIPM is very happy with both the sportsmanship and fair play of the athletes and the crowd. This World Championships held all the disciplines (except swimming which is in the adjacent building) under one roof. This fulfils our idea of a Pentathlon Stadium where spectators can watch all the disciplines from one seat. This is one of many 'Pentathlon Stadiums' to be used in the future. Thank you to the Russian Federation for hosting such an unforgettable World Championships."

This incredible day of Modern Pentathlon does not bring an end to the World Championship as the athletes and fans favourite event, the mixed relay kicks off tomorrow. Stay tuned to Pentathlon.org for all the action.
