Tereshuk Becomes New Modern Pentathlon World Champion
Victoria Tereshuk (UKR) has sprinted her way into the history books to become the 2011 World Champion here in Moscow, Russia.
Tereshuk produced an incredible last 1000m in the combined event to overtake Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) who had to settle for silver and Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) who finished with bronze at the 1980 Olympic Stadium.
Tereshuk started the day slowly, as she finished 18th in the fencing, a quick swim together with a solid ride moved her back into contention.
The mother of one then started 10th in the combined event, where her devastating running quickly moved her into the medal positions. It was not until the last run where Tereshuk managed to overtake Sarolta Kovacs to claim the World Championships gold medal.
The 2008 Beijing bronze medallist said after her memorable victory: "When I was running that final lap, all I could think of was gold. I always thought I could do it, I know I am one of the fastest runners. This is a dream come true. I was very lucky as I only just scraped through the qualification to make the final. I dedicate this to my 2 year old baby girl. My goal now is gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games."
Kovacs, who came close to becoming the 1st ever Modern Pentathlete to hold both the Junior and Senior World Championships titles (Won 2010 Junior World Championships in Hungary) said: "I am so happy with the silver. Even though I started 1st in the combined event, I know I had to be at my best to stay in the medal places as there were so many good combined event athletes around me. I was happy with my fence and swim. I had a perfect ride which boosted my confidence for the combined. I am glad I was able to hold off Asadauskaite in the finish."
Asadauskaite who has capped off a remarkable comeback year after giving birth to her 1st child last year with a bronze medal said: "This is great. I am so satisfied with this medal. I am getting back to my peak fitness after my child as I showed today."
Elodie Clouvel (FRA) made a remarkable comeback from a broken foot which ruled her out of the European Championships to finish 6th. She said "I am so happy to be back competing and 6th place is amazing"
Lena Schoneborn (GER) who failed in her bid to win the only Modern Pentathlon title she is yet to win finished 5th. This was enough to led her German team, which also consisted of Annika Schleu (9th) and Eva Trautmann (12th) to the teams gold medal. 2nd was Hungary and Russia claimed 3rd spot.
Since the top 3 have already secured their Olympic Qualification at the 2011 European Championships, the 3 Olympic Qualification spots available here will be allocated to the Olympic Pentathlon World Ranking which is decided in June 2012.
This was also the 1st event conduced with the new precision laser shooting technology. "Precision laser shooting was used with great success." UIPM Secretary General Joël Bouzou said. "Laser precision shooting will be used at the London 2012 Olympics and we know it will be a huge hit."
Stay tuned for the Men's World Championships Final tomorrow.
