FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Star-studded Youth World Championships start today in Poland!

With the age-groups extended to 20 year old for the juniors and 17 for the cadets, the upcoming Youth World Championships in Legnica (POL) on 22-28 August feature a lot of athletes who have already shined the highest level.

More than 560 athletes from 57 countries will gather in Legnica, a town in the upper west side of Poland, close to Germany. In recent years, the youth categories went through a series of changes to give more time for athlete’s development and support the Youth Olympic Games.

As a result, three major youth events have taken place in the last three years in archery: the 2008 Youth World Championships in Ogden (USA), the 2009 edition in Antalya (TUR) and the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Moreover, the age groups have been extended since the last world championships. In 2011, the athletes born on 1 January 1994 or later can compete in the Cadet category (turning 17 at most in 2011) and the ones born between 1 January 1991 until 31 December 1993 will compete in Juniors (turning 20 at most in 2011).

All this means that many participants in Legnica have already shined in several of these youth events, or even at the highest level of archery. For instance, the fresh senior compound men world champion from Turin, Christopher PERKINS (CAN), will compete in Legnica! In Compound Women the 2009 team world champion, Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS) and the individual silver medallist Jorina COETZEE (RSA) will be in Poland. In Recurve Men, the 2011 team silver medallist in Turin, Gael PREVOST (FRA) will be the big favourite, while the 2010 Commonwealth Games Champion in Recurve Women and 2009 cadet world champion, Deepika KUMARI (IND), will be looking for another youth title.

On top of the Indian athlete, there will be several 2009 youth world champions returning to action such as Paige PEARCE, Kendal NICELY and Ben CLELAND (USA), Inge VAN CASPEL (NED), Mario CARDOZO and Adolfo MEDINA (MEX), KIM Joo Wan and SUNG Wookyeong (KOR).

The following medallists from the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore will compete as well in Legnica: Rick VAN DEN OEVER (NED), TAN Ya-Ting (TPE), Tatiana SEGINA (RUS), Anton KAROUKIN (BLR), Gloria FILIPPI (ITA), Gregor RAJH (SLO) and Begunhan Ehlif UNSAL (TUR).

The other ones to watch in recurve are the 2008 junior world champion Luca MELOTTO (ITA), the 2009 junior indoor world champion Ivan DENIS (BEL), the 2006 cadet world champion Ryan TYACK (AUS), Thomas BARBER (GBR), Atanu DAS (IND), Mark NESBITT (GBR), Rick VAN DER VEN (NED),Mariana AVITIA (MEX), Lidia SICHENIKOVA (UKR), Carina CHRISTIANSEN (DEN), Miriam ALARCON (ESP), Rimil BURIULY and Seema VERMA (IND), Miranda LEEK (USA) as well as Macej FALDZINSKI and Natalia LESNIAK from the host country Poland.

In the compound division, the experts will have a close eye on the 2009 junior indoor world champion Svetlana CHERKASHNEVA (RUS), the 2008 junior world champion M. J. KROGSHEDE (DEN), Jean PIZZARO (PUR), Kevin BURRI (SUI), Rahul CHATTERJEE and Jignas CHITTIBOMMA (IND), Mike SCHLOESSER and Mark REMIE (NED).

Mixed team titles will be awarded for the first time at youth world championships, meaning the athletes will play for none the less than 20 world titles in Legnica! Stay tune on the world archery website for all the action!
