Former FC Indiana midfielder wins the World Cup

Mizuho Sakaguchi starred in FC Indiana midfield in 2009

Mizuho Sakaguchi who starred in midfield for FC Indiana, scored Japan’s third penalty kick as Japan beat the US on penalty kicks to win the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sakaguchi, who started for her country in all six Women’s World Cup, played for FC Indiana during the 2009 season. She helped the club to a 14-2-1 overall record and had 3 assists in FC Indiana’s 3-2 win over the Chicago Red Stars and 1 assist in FC Indiana 2-1 loss to WPS champions Sky Blue FC.
In total, four nations (Mexico, Japan, Canada, New Zealand) have included eight former FC Indiana players on their FIFA Women’s World Cup rosters but there was disappointment
for Lisa-Marie Woods when she was left out of Norway's final squad because of injuries.
