Media Agency Creates Infographic on the Financial Impact of the NBA and NFL Lockouts

Infographic Examines Potential Economic Impact of NFL and NBA Lockouts on Advertisers and League Cities

Ocean Media (http://www.oceanmediainc.com), a leading independent media planning and buying agency, has released a new infographic on the widespread economic impact of the 2011 NFL and NBA lockouts. With arguably the two biggest professional sports leagues in the U.S. potentially shutting down their upcoming seasons, the impact will be felt in ways beyond what Americans spend their free time watching.

The financial impact is gargantuan, estimated to be well into the tens of billions of dollars. The TV networks that broadcast NFL games expect to lose $3 billion in ad revenues while those broadcasting NBA games will lose around $1 billion. Some of the lost revenue will be recouped by selling ads for replacement programming, but history shows these programs will be far less lucrative. During the NHL lockout of 2004, TV ratings for networks broadcasting hockey were down 50 percent, resulting in significantly lower ad rates.

It's not just advertisers who will feel the pain. Fantasy sports account for billions of dollars each year and legal gambling in Las Vegas isn't far behind. Each NFL city could lose as much as $20 million in restaurant and hotel revenues per home game missed.
