SEATTLE'S BEST! Cayle George wins IFPA8 World Pinball Championship
64 of the World’s greatest players traveled from 16 countries to compete in the 8th Annual International Flipper Pinball Association’s World Pinball Championship held in Sweden, May 27-29th.
They were 64 of the world’s greatest pinball players, traveling across oceans, from sixteen countries, logging thousands of miles from Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Finland, The Netherlands, Canada, Spain, France, Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, United Kingdom and, of course, the United States, in order to compete in the penultimate event of the year. The IFPA8 World Pinball Championship proved to be the supreme test of individual stamina, endurance, patience, skill and the wizardry necessary to control the movements of a 2.6 oz ball of silver on games from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s as well as the latest state-of-the-art models.
Sponsored by Stern Pinball, Raw Thrills, Betson Enterprises, Play Meter Magazine, Planetary Pinball Supply, GameWorks, the American Amusement Manufacturers Association, the Amusement & Music Operators Association and Prilosec OTC, the IFPA8 World Pinball Championship was staged at the Balacs Pinball Parlour in Vargarda, Sweden May 27th- 29th. And after a grueling marathon lasting more than thirty hours of head-to-head play, it was the remarkable performance of 30-year old Seattle native, Cayle George who proved his mettle as one of the best pinball players in the world.
The International Flipper Pinball Association (IFPA) was created with the express purpose of encouraging, supporting and endorsing competitive pinball throughout the world. The organization provides oversight and assistance to not only establishing pinball leagues, but also tournaments (over 220 events are being held annually) and other promotional activities.
“The staggering and explosive growth of the entire worldwide community of pinball players and enthusiasts has been nothing short of remarkable since we re-launched the IFPA just a few short years ago. And with this year being the 140th Anniversary of pinball; the future has never looked brighter,” states Roger Sharpe, Co-Director of the organization.
The World Pinball Tour features over $250,000 in cash and prizes given away each year. With nineteen international country directors, the IFPA has additionally created the first official player ranking system, which awards points based upon player performance. The World Pinball Player Rankings (WPPR) includes over 9,500 players from 27 different countries. And these numbers keep increasing with the revered entertainment attraction—pinball—continuing to draw in men, women, boys and girls—all looking to embrace the timeless battle of man versus machine.
