Choon-huan Lee has stormed to the gold medal at UIPM World Cup #4 at Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Centre in Chengdu, China.

Lee was able to hold his nerve in a tense final shoot to power past silver medalist Serguei Karyakin (RUS) and Bence Demeter (HUN) who showed great speed to move from 6th to 3rd in the final run.

Lee started the day spectacularly by recording his best ever fencing result, finishing 4th with 904 points. The Korean dropped down the leader board after a disappointing swim, but showed his experience by taming a difficult horse and getting around the course perfectly to gain maximum points. This put him in 7th position going into the combined event. Lee slowly moved his way through the field and his victory was secure after his superb final shoot and run.

The 31 year old said after winning Korea's 1st ever World Cup gold medal: "All my career I have won silver, I am excited to finally win my first gold in an international competition. I am so proud to be apart of such a successful team and I would like to dedicate this medal to my family!"

Silver medalist Karyakin who has not won a medal since his World Championship victory at this very venue last year said: "It was a very long and difficult day. This stadium is definitely lucky for me as I it brings out my best form, I wish I could bring it everywhere with me! My combined today was the key as my last run got me the silver medal."

World Junior Champion Demeter announced himself on the senior stage today with his bronze medal. An ecstatic Demeter said after the event: "This is only my 5th World Cup and to already have a World Cup medal is a dream. I am now looking forward to the World Cup Final which I am now qualified for."

It was a great day for the Koreans with Dong-hun Nam grabbing 4th and Jinhwa Jung 6th. They were split by the local crowd hero and Asian Champion Zhongrong Cao (CHN) who was 5th capping off a spectacular day for the Asians.
