Khuraskina Sprints to Gold at UIPM World Cup #4

Ekaterina Khuraskina (RUS) has produced an amazing combined event to win UIPM World Cup #4 at Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Centre.

Khuraskina stormed past eventual silver medalist Heather Fell (GBR) in the final 1000 meters to claim her 1st ever World Cup medal. Annika Schleu (GER) shot her way to the bronze medal as she only missed 3 shots to go with her perfect shooting in the qualification rounds.

Khuraskina started the day strongly finishing 2nd in the fencing before dropping down the leader board with a poor swim. However a rare perfect ride put her in 4th position at the start of the combined event, a massive 52 seconds behind Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) who up until this point was having a dream day. Poor shooting from Kovacs mixed with near perfect shooting and electric running from Khuraskina secured her dream gold and dropped Kovacs down to 6th position.

"I am so happy with my first ever medal" said Khuraskina. "The key for me was my riding, I am still very nervous riding after my accident a few years ago so getting 1200 points is amazing for me. My team mates and coaches have helped me a lot, so I would like to dedicate this medal to them."

Silver medalist Heather Fell who also won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics said: "I haven't been on the podium for a long time, so this medal is a mix of excitement and relief as I have had a frustrating time recently. I hope this result will be enough for me to make the World Cup Final, which will be tough due to the strength of the British team."

Annika Schleu couldn't hide her excitement with her bronze medal "This is my 1st ever medal in only my 5th World Cup. This is a dream come true as I never thought this would happen!"

Local favorite and Asian Champion Qian Chen (CHN) had to settle for 4th position ahead of World #5 Leila Gyenesei (HUN).

Medals were presented by UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann, UIPM Vice President Kui-Sung Choi and UIPM Member for Development Bin Zhang.

Stay tuned for the Men's final tomorrow on
