Svoboda Victorious at UIPM World Cup #3

David Svoboda (CZE) has showed his class to sprint to victory at a wet Men's Final at Modern Pentathlon World Cup #3. Svoboda out ran Pavlo Tymoshchenko (UKR) and young Hwang Woojin (KOR) who both claimed a well-deserved silver and bronze respectively.
European Champion Svoboda started the day brilliantly by winning the fencing discipline for the first time which "filled him with confidence for the rest of the day". After that he never looked back with a quick swim and a perfect ride left him starting 2nd in the combined event behind swimming winner Remigiusz Golis (POL).
The gold looked assured for Svoboda until the final shoot, Svoboda said after the event "I was very nervous on the final shoot. I am used to be back in 10th position so when I was so far ahead I panicked and I missed my 1st 5 shots. However I then kept calm and got the next 5 and then ran as fast as I could to get over the line 1st."
Silver medallist Tymoshchenko who claimed gold at World Cup #1 stated: "Today I was very lucky, I made a lot of mistakes, but fortunately Pentathlon allows you to make up for them. I pushed myself very hard in the run and was glad to get the silver. I am now looking forward to the Olympic Qualification events."
Woojin, who turned 21 today had a bronze medal to celebrate. He said "I am very proud to win this medal. I fenced well, swam well and very satisfied with my first ever World Cup medal."
Pre event favourite Adam Marosi (HUN) finished back in 5th position, however this was enough to propel him back to World #1, a position that he occupied for the majority of 2009 and 2010.
UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann: "UIPM is pleased to have such a high quality Pentathlon centre with all facilities in such close proximity together like we have here in Százhalombatta.  We will now make this a home for Modern Pentathlon for the future."
This brings to the end another successful UIPM World Cup. The 4th and last World Cup will be held 26-29 May in Chengdu, China. This will be the final opportunity for athletes to gain valuable World Cup Series Ranking points to qualify for the World Cup Final, which is also an Olympic Qualification Event and test event for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
