Százhalombatta, Hungary 7 May 2011 - Aya Medany (EGY) has had a brilliant day to win Modern Pentathlon World Cup #3 in Százhalombatta, Hungary. Medany outshot Lena Schoneborn (GER) and Mhairi Spence (GBR) in the final shoot to storm to gold with Schoneborn and Spence having to settle for silver and bronze respectively.
Triple World Champion Amelie Caze (FRA) was due to start the combined event first, but she was forced to withdraw due to an injury sustained in the fencing which left her absolutely distraught. Medany was able to take full advantage of Caze's absence. The key to 22 year old's victory was her extraordinary performance in her weakest event, riding, where she was able to obtain maximum points and gave her the confidence to storm to gold.
A very pleased Medany, who has not won a World Cup since 2009 stated: "It has been very hard for me over the last few years as I have been recovering from an operation. Now I am finally fit I can start winning again. I feel when I can have a good ride I can always win medals. I would like to dedicate this medal to my home country Egypt, which has had a tough year."
Olympic Champion Schoneborn after claiming her 2 medal of the year: "Aya was fantastic today, full credit to her. I am ecstatic with silver, I was very happy with my fencing which I won and the rest of the events fell into place as well. I could have shot better, but still very happy."
Spence, who produced a strong all round performance to win her 3rd World Cup medal of her career said "I've been working hard and I managed to hold my form and nail the things that really mattered today, this is really satisfying and I am now looking forward to some well-earned rest"
Sylvia Czwojdzinska (POL), Yane Marques (BRA) and Victoria Tereshuk (UKR) rounded out the top 6 with Anastasiya Prokopenko (BLR) again producing an extraordinary combined event performance to sneak into 7th position after starting from 18th position.
