SPORTACCORD CONVENTION EMERGES AS NEWS PLATFORM

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - The SportAccord Convention is becoming the place for international sporting bodies and companies to launch new deals and initiatives. This year’s event in London from April 3-8 was the setting for a flurry of newsworthy happenings picked up by the media, including the signing of the contract to create a new UCI WorldTour cycling event in Beijing, the announcement of the Sochi World promotional venue in London and the unveiling by London Mayor Boris Johnson of a major new report on global events. The International Olympic Committee also announced the new sports disciplines on the Olympic Winter Games programme at the 2011 SportAccord Convention.

“Our event was created around the official meetings of our associations and other sporting bodies, so there have always been elections and decisions to report about, but what was really noticeable and gratifying this year was that our delegates have recognised that we offer a fantastic opportunity to get their messages out to the world,” said Anna Hellman, Executive Director of SportAccord Convention. “Our own daily publication during SportAccord Convention Week was full of stories about deals and initiatives launched at our event, and with about 200 media attendees from around the world, the Convention appears to be becoming the place to make announcements.”

Held in a different city every year, the SportAccord Convention was held in London one year ahead of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Convention’s conference sessions featured an eye-popping list of speakers, including Mayor Johnson, London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe and great Olympians Dame Kelly Holmes and Edwin Moses, as well as many top sports business leaders. The dynamic exhibition was once again completely sold out well in advance.

The tenth anniversary edition of the SportAccord Convention will take place in the city of Québec in Canada from May 20-25, 2012.
