Gold for Rimsaite at Modern Pentathlon World Cup #2
World #2 Donata Rimsaite (RUS) has claimed gold in a dramatic Combined Event at World Cup #2 at Sassari, Italy. Rimsaite held off Anastasiya
Prokopenko (BLR) who remarkably came from 19th position to claim silver. Freyja Prentice (GBR) held her nerve in a packed final shoot to win a well deserved bronze at the 2nd ever World Cup conducted with the new environmentally friendly laser shooting.
Rimsaite did not start the day well, finishing down in 7th in the fencing behind Aya Medany (EGY), but a strong swim and excellent ride got her into striking distance before the Combined Event, an opportunity which she did not let slip. "I am very proud to win this medal for my new country Russia. I was so scared in the final run as I know how fast Prokopenko is, I was so glad when I got over the finishing line first. It was such a tight Combined Event, any of the top 15 girls could have won it. "
Prokopenko won the Combined Event by a big distance which was helped by her near perfect shooting as her 15 shots only took her an astonishing 40.3 seconds.
Prentice started the day strongly finishing 2nd in the fencing, however a poor swim and ride dropped her down the leaders board, but her impressive run in the Combined Event ensured her 3rd place: "It was so close today. I just decided I had to focus on myself, there were so many people running past me in the Combined Event, I did not know what place I was until the last shot, then I just ran as fast as I could. It's my first World Cup medal today and I just wanted it so badly."
Sylvia Czwojdzinska (POL) who performed impressively all day said: "I was very happy with 4th position, I started 2nd, but I quickly slipped 6th, so to get back up there was a dream. I had a very good day, I fenced the best I have in awhile, then had a near perfect ride on a great horse. I was sick all last week so I am ecstatic with this result."
