Bid Team Presents its Vision at SportAccord Conference in London

Annecy 2018 President, Charles Beigbeder, today promised “an authentic Games in the heart of the mountains, with the athletes and for the future” that could “connect with the world through tradition and innovation” during a presentation at the annual SportAccord International Convention, in London.

The Annecy Bid explained how it would reunite the “rich heritage of the Alps with the Olympic Movement” to “offer a true global vision.”

Beigbeder led an Annecy 2018 delegation in a 20 minute presentation made to hundreds of SportAccord delegates including members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC); representatives from London 2012 and the world’s media.

Joining Charles Beigbeder on the stage were: French IOC member and Olympic Champion in athletics, Guy Drut; French Sports Minister and Karate Champion, Chantal Jouano, French National Olympic Committee President, Denis Masseglia; and Mayor of Annecy, Jean-Luc Rigaut.

France’s IOC members played key roles as, Guy Drut, opened the presentation by thanking SportAccord for a “superb welcome”, reaffirming “France’s lasting commitment to serve the Olympic Movement” and highlighting Annecy 2018 as a “a bid that truly has sport and athletes at its very heart.”

The presentation also featured a special video message by IOC member and treble Olympic Champion skier, Jean-Claude Killy, who said:

“I am thrilled Annecy is a Candidate City for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  We have what I consider to be an outstanding programme and we want to use it to host a memorable, splendid Games that will go down in history.”

Describing Annecy as “the capital of the Alps”, Minister of Sport, Chantal Jouano, noted that London had taught her “the favourites don’t always win” and “that any bidding city must understand the challenges sport faces and offer a truly global vision to resolve them.”

Ms Jouano also reiterated the government’s total support for the bid and said Annecy 2018 could act as a “global platform” for “unique and authentic Games” and would “use that platform year in, year out to reach the entire world.”

Charles Beigbeder explained how Annecy would stage “Games that reunite the rich heritage of the Alps with Olympic and Paralympic sport to stage a passionate and powerful celebration…devised with athletes and hosted by welcoming mountain communities.”

Beigbeder said that the French Alps had been “shaped and guided by Olympism” since 1924 when Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games.  He acknowledged the role of the Chamonix Games in “speeding the development of winter sport and providing and template for subsequent games” and promised that 100 years on the region was ready to “evolve a new vision” to re-invigorate the connection between the Winter Games and young people worldwide”.

Speaking on behalf of the athletes involved in the bid, French NOC President, Denis Masseglia, emphasized the union of snow and ice sports at the Annecy and Chamonix Mount-Blanc hubs that would bring athletes, spectators and the Olympic Family closer together; truly world-class venues and a “year-round” sporting legacy provided by the international training centre”.

Mayor or Annecy, Jean-Luc Rigaut, added that “seven million international guests” were given a “unique welcome” in the region each year and that hosting the 2018 Winter and Paralympic Games would be the “ultimate honour” for Annecy.

Following the presentation, Charles Beigbeder thanked SportAccord for inviting Annecy 2018 to present at their Congress, stating: “We are enormously grateful to SportAccord for giving us this opportunity to share our vision of Games that would benefit Winter Sports worldwide.

“We are in the midst of the international phase of our campaign and it is vital we travel around the world to meet with people from the Olympic Family, listen to their feedback, and learn from their experiences.

“With just under 100 days to go our team will be doing everything we can to convince the IOC that Annecy 2018 is the best bid for the entire Olympic Movement.”
