RIO 2016 PRESENTS PROGRESS REPORT TO INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC FEDERATIONS

Rio 2016 presented an update on the organisation of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games to the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) General Assembly, which took place on Monday, April 4, at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel, in London.

Organising Committee President, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, gave an overview of the works and projects that are already in progress, underlining the success of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games logo unveiling; the Domestic Sponsorship Programme launch and the announcement of the first sponsors in the form of Financial Services and Insurance Partners Bradesco and Bradesco Seguros and Telecommunications Services Partners Claro and Embratel; the works already under way for the construction of the Olympic and Paralympic Village, the Port area renovation, the Transoeste and Transcarioca Bus Rapid Transit services, and the underground’s line 4; the development of the Police Pacification Units (UPP) programme; and the confirmation of 17 new hotels in the city.

The Rio 2016 President highlighted the importance of showing that Rio is fulfilling the promises made by the bid. “We are absolutely on target according to the schedule set by the International Olympic Committee, working in close collaboration with the Federal, State and City Governments, and building a highly qualified team to deliver the Games. We are grateful that we can present this picture to the International Federations and receive such a positive feedback,” Nuzman explained.

Nuzman was followed by Rio 2016 Sports Director Agberto Guimarães, who reported on the recent activities of his department, such as the start of relationships with the International Olympic Federations (including an observation visit to a Rugby Sevens World Series event) and the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Games Organising Committees, the launch of the Registering and Selection Process for Pre-Games Training Camps, and the completion of the Olympic Park Venue Brief.

Agberto Guimarães stressed the need to keep the International Olympic Federations updated on each step of the Games organisation. “The Federations are among the core clients of the Organising Committee and, in particular, of the Sports Department. It is up to them to set out the requirements that meet the needs of elite athletes. Developing a permanent relationship with them is critical to the success of the event,” he added.

Also this week, Rio 2016 will present its progress report during the International Olympic Committee Executive Board meetings, to be held this Tuesday and Wednesday, April 5 and 6, also at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel, in London.
