Letters of Intent received for 2017 IAAF World Championships in Athletics

Monaco - With the deadline now closed, letters of intent from Member Federations interested in hosting the 2017 edition of the IAAF World Championships have now been received from five countries:

Germany (Berlin)

Great Britain and NI (London)

Hungary (Budapest)

Qatar (Doha)

Spain (City tbc)

In the coming weeks, detailed documentation regarding the bidding and evaluation procedure will be provided to candidates, and on 1 September, the IAAF will announce the list of Official Candidates. The 2017 World Championships host will then be selected by the IAAF Council at its November meeting in Monaco.

The World Championships in Athletics is the biggest event on the IAAF Calendar. At the last edition in Berlin in 2009, there were 9 days of competition, 2000 athletes, 200 territories represented, 10,500 officials and volunteers and more than US $7 million in prize money.

Berlin 2009 was watched by a cumulative global TV audience of 8 billion people. In the host country Germany, the event attracted a cumulative audience of 70 million people over 46 hours of coverage, while worldwide, TV viewers from 201 territories tuned in.

The next three editions of the IAAF World Championships will be held in Daegu, KOR (2011), Moscow, RUS (2013) and Beijing, CHN (2015). Past editions of the IAAF World Championships were held in:

Berlin, GER (2009), Osaka, JPN (2007), Helsinki, FIN (2005), Paris St-Denis, FRA (2003), Edmonton, CAN (2001), Seville, ESP (1999), Athens, GRE (1997), Goteborg, SWE (1995), Stuttgart, GER (1993), Tokyo, JPN (1991), Rome, ITA (1987), Helsinki, FIN (1983).
