Qatar Olympic Committee to participate in SportAccord International Convention in London

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) will participate in the SportAccord International Convention scheduled to be held in London from 3-8 April 2011.

QOC signed a silver sponsorship contract to support the SportAccord Convention and to demonstrate Qatar’s ongoing commitment to working with International Federations to host major sporting events in the future.

Sport is a way of reaching out to the world and the QOC is determined that Qatar should become universally recognised as the sports hub of the Middle East and a major destination for world-class events in all sports. The QOC believe that sport promotes friendship, unity and peace and Qatar is determined to play its role in this process.

QOC plays the central role of delivering sport and the opportunity to take part in sport to the people of Qatar and the world. Its responsibilities range from the provision of community and grass-roots sports programmes to constructing and maintaining the facilities which host sports’ events at the community and international levels.

Doha already has the hosting rights for the Tennis WTA and ATP Championships, the 2010 World Indoor Athletics Championships, 2011 Pan Arab Games, 2011 World Arabian Horse Organisation Conference (WAHO), and 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment in 2011.

QOC also organises the Schools Olympic Program. The vision is to inspire a young generation in Qatar to participate in sport, adopt and live healthy lifestyles. QOC creates events to educate, engage and influence young athletes inspiring them to play an active role in the local community.

The city successfully hosted the 2011 AFC Football Asian Cup, 2010 FIVB Men’s and Women's World Clubs Volleyball Championship, and 2009 World Gymnasiade, with more than 3,000 students. In 2008, Qatar hosted the first ever MotoGP night race in the world. The Qatar Masters is part of the European PGA golf tour - the course is known by players for its challenging desert-type terrain and generous total prize money: $2.5 million in 2011.

In 2008, Qatar became the first country in the Gulf region to host a Global Champions Tour, which brought the top riders of the world to showcase their talent at the Qatar Equestrian Federation. The three-day event with a prize money of 415,000 euros was the first leg of the GCT.

QOC looks forward to meeting the international sports movement at the 2011 SportAccord Convention in London next month.
