LORD MAYOR OF MUNICH WELCOMES WORLD'S MEDIA

First taste of Bavarian hospitality for journalists covering IOC Evaluation Commission visit

Munich, 28 February 2011: The Lord Mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, hosted a welcome reception this evening for national and international media in the Bavarian capital’s spectacular City Hall, on the eve of the IOC’s Evaluation Commission inspection.

The Lord Mayor, a former journalist, was joined by Munich 2018 sports ambassadors Verena Bentele and Marina Kiehl at the historic venue, which overlooks the proposed 2018 medals plaza. Close to 100 media from all over the world attended the event.

Mayor Ude said:

‘I am delighted to welcome you all here tonight. It is wonderful to have so many of our friends from the media with us this week, wanting to learn what our bid is all about, and what our city is all about. I look forward to talking with you all tonight and during the Evaluation Commission visit.’

From 1-4 March, the Munich 2018 Bid Committee will present its concept for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to the14 IOC Evaluation Commission members through a series of presentations and site visits to key Munich 2018 venues.

Background
Munich, in collaboration with Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Berchtesgadener Land, is applying to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The application will be put together and managed by Bewerbungsgesellschaft München 2018 GmbH, with Karatina Witt as Chair, Bernhard Schwank as CEO and Jürgen Bühl as Managing Director. Shareholders in the application organisation are the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) with 51 per cent, the City of Munich (30 per cent), the Free State of Bavaria (nine per cent), the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (eight per cent) and the district of Berchtesgadener Land (two per cent). The bid is being supported by national sponsors Adidas, Allianz, the BMW Group, BayWa, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Post, Flughafen München GmbH, Lotto Bayern, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, METRO GROUP, and the Sparkasse Finance Group, along with national suppliers ARGE (Albert Speer & Partner and PROPROJEKT), Deloitte, Getty Images, GfK Verein, IMMO 2018, Messe München GmbH, Norton Rose LLP, Munich Olympic Park, pilot sport and Stadtwerke München GmbH.
