PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA, 16 February 2011: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission today officially commenced its assessment of PyeongChang's bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018.

Senior members of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid Committee presented to the Evaluation Commission Members and explained the bid's core concept and vision for the Winter Games in 2018.

Led by PyeongChang 2018 Chairman and CEO, Yang Ho Cho, the Bid Committee detailed how the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang will help stimulate a new market for winter sports in Asia and help a young, dynamic and growing population connect with the spirit of Olympism and the values of the Olympic Movement.

The PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee went on to highlight how a Winter Games in Korea would be a historic choice for the IOC as the nation has previously never had the honour of hosting the Winter Games, and it would be only the third time that the event had been hosted in Asia.

PyeongChang 2018's overall vision for the Winter Games is articulated as 'New Horizons', and the Bid Committee explained how this concept offers the Olympic Movement and International Federations the opportunity for new growth and new possibilities by engaging with a growing young generation in Asia.

The PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee also unveiled further details of its Winter Games legacy plan including the new USD $1.4 billion purpose-built Alpensia Resort.

Yang Ho Cho, PyeongChang 2018 Chairman and CEO, said: “We have been delighted to welcome distinguished Members of the IOC Evaluation Commission to PyeongChang as we seek to show what our bid can offer the Olympic Movement.  We have made a very positive and constructive start to the Evaluation Commission visit.

"PyeongChang's vision for 2018 is simple and clear, and we express it as 'New Horizons'. We aspire to offer the Olympic Movement and the world of winter sports a legacy of new growth and new potential.”
